About

Bookward Bound Bindery is owned and run by bookbinder and artist Elize de Beer.

Hello all!

I have my origins in South Africa and am now based in Cork, Ireland in the wonderful seaside town of Myrtville. I am mainly a self-thought bookbinder but have had the opportunity to apprentice in conservation binderies where I was able to learn a few more tricks about creating books and how to repair and care for them.

Books are extraordinary objects that carry so much potential and meaning; this is why I love to make them.

All my books and enclosures are made by hand. I have a few tools to help me along the way, but each book is sewn and covered with my two hands. I mainly use traditional and archival binding methods but with a contemporary sensibility. It is through this approach, I know that I am creating a book that is not only designed well visually but will stand the test of time – even if it’s a sketchbook that lives at the bottom of a bag waiting for inspiration to strike!

Collaboration has always been a main focal point in my bookbinding practice. I’ve enjoyed creatively exploring what a book could be through other artists’ projects and ideas.

Whether you are looking to have your novel bound or artwork brought to life, I would be happy to help with your project.
